The 7th Hybrid Power Systems Workshop that is held on the Faroe Islands from 23 – 24 May 2023 has a focus on Hybrid Power Systems, Micro-Grids, Island Power Systems and Hybrid Power Plants. International participants will benefit from presentations on grid aspects, system studies, design aspects and ancillary services in both Hybrid Power Systems and Hybrid Power Plants.
HOMER Software founder, Peter Lilienthal, will be speaking at the workshop to share his industry experiences in the presentation ‘The Evolution of Hybrid Power Systems: Insights from 30 years of modeling’.

For domestic consumers in the rural areas of Eastern Ethiopia, as in other developing countries, the typical source of electrical supply is diesel generators. However, diesel generators are associated with both emissions, which adversely affect the environment and increase diesel fuel prices, which inflate the prices of consumer goods. The Ethiopia government has taken steps towards addressing this issue by proposing The Hybrid Mini-Grid Project, which involves the installation of wind and solar energy systems in facilities with existing diesel generators. However, as a contribution to this effort, this study proposes, design, modeling & controlling of hybrid power systems incorporating with wind energy, solar energy and battery storage to replace the stand-alone diesel power systems servicing Gashamo village in Somali Region of Ethiopia. This design analysis proposes to confirm the feasibility of these hybrid systems with many configurations being profitable. By applying HOMER and/or MATLAB Analysis is to determine the best hybrid system configuration option that would reduce diesel fuel consumption, transportation and logistics of fuels, pollution, power system unreliability issues, jointly minimize emissions and reduce net present cost of the fuel, therefore This analysis determine that a wind-pv-diesel-battery configuration is the best option to replace a stand-alone diesel system providing electricity to Gashamo village.
