Microgrids in Haiti

Haiti has an urgent need for increased access to modern power. It has the lowest electrification rate in the Western Hemisphere and even the urban areas with access to grid power have such a problem with power quality and availability that individual diesel generators are the supply option of choice for most businesses. As part of a project funded by the Inter-American Development Bank, HOMER Energy is working with Soluz, Navigant Consulting, the Berkeley research Group, TTA, and JM Consulting to document Haiti’s current experience with microgrids and develop a plan for expanding the use of sustainable microgrids in Haiti. As part of that project, Dr. Lilienthal and HOMER Energy’s senior engineer, John Glassmire, visited 10 hybrid renewable power systems in Haiti and participated in a rural electrification conference, including a half-day HOMER training.

HOMER Pro News

The response to the October 2014 release of HOMER Pro has been very positive, but we are not done yet! We are gearing up for the January 15 release of HOMER Pro 3.1, which will bring full HOMER 2 capability and much more to HOMER Pro. Meanwhile, here are some things that HOMER users should make note of:

  • HOMER Pro 3.0.9 is now available as a no-cost upgrade for HOMER Pro users. It fixes several significant bugs. You can always view known issues and bug fixes here.
  • HOMER Pro 3.1 will be a free upgrade for current users. It will include two new modules - advanced grid and hydrogen.
  • Our launch special pricing and matching license offer (see below) end with the release of HOMER 3.1. So we recommend purchasing before January 15 to take advantages of these offers.
  • There is much more coming in 2015 - certification programs, trainings, French and Spanish versions, many new components, and new capabilities.
  • We appreciate your patience as we introduced a new licensing program that allowed us to customize HOMER Pro to your needs. We will be simplifying the licensing with HOMER Pro 3.1. Thanks to all our users who have helped us troubleshoot the new system.

HOMER Pro is available as a two-week trial, with no credit card required. Current HOMER 2 licensees can get a base version of HOMER Pro to match their HOMER 2 license at no additional cost - but only through January 15, 2015. Visit the HOMER website today to download your copy.

A Sunny Development in West Central Africa

Cost-effective, self-sufficient solar power for remote communities will be a reality with help from power management company, Eaton, who recently announced they will assist in powering Africa’s largest solar PV microgrid project. Eaton will provide electrical engineering services and power distribution equipment for the construction of a 5-megawayy (MW) solar photovoltaic (PV) microgrid system in Annobon Province, an island of Equatorial Guinea whose residents spend an average of 15 to 20 percent of their income on supplemental power. “The modern microgrid being applied in the Annobon Province will serve as a model for bringing reliable and cost-effective electrical power to other remote communities, helping to advance their economies and quality of life,” said Frank Campbell, president, Electrical Sector, EMEA, Eaton. more

Parter Program Website Preparing to Launch

One of our recent projects has been finding ways to bring more value to our Industry and Component partners. We all benefit from the growth of the microgrid market, and we are pleased to be able to work with the pioneers of this industry. We are preparing to launch a few Partners Website, that will help our users find information about components, system integrators, manufacturers, and certified HOMER Professionals. You can preview the HOMER Energy Partner Website here.

Annual Installed Capacity of Distributed Generation to Double by 2023

According to a recent report from Navigant Research, the worldwide installed capacity of distributed generation is expected to more than double in the next 9 years. With dramatic expansion of DG threatening utility business models and giving customers new levels of control over the energy they consume, capacity is expected to be at 165,000 megawatts in 2023. “Utilities in Western Europe are losing hundreds of billions of dollars in market capitalization as DG reaches higher levels of penetration in leading countries such as Germany, the United Kingdom, and Italy,” says Dexter Gauntlett, senior research analyst with Navigant Research.  “The prospect of similar losses by utilities in the United States is prompting a struggle among utilities, the DG industry, and regulators over the future of DG models.” Read the recent report here.

On-Demand Webinar:
Managing the Impact of Partial State of Charge (PSOC) in Cycling Batteries in Solar Microgrids

Partial state of charge is a critical issue in the design and management of solar microgrids. In this on-deman webinar, HOMER Energy joins market partner Trojan Battery Company to discuss the ways microgrid integrators can develop top-performing systems using HOMER simulations and Trojan industrial batteries with Smart Carbon technology. The webinar recording also includes all Q&A discussion from the live event held on Sept. 2. view webinar (registration required)

Holiday Hours

HOMER Energy will have reduced staffing during the period of December 24 through January 4. We appreciate your patience as we may take a bit longer than usual to respond to support queries.
