Not to be missed: A Tour of HOMER Pro with the Pros from HOMER (Energy!) - a Free Educational Webinar

March 18, 1500 GMT
HOMER Energy engineers and executives are teaming up to offer a free live tour of HOMER Pro, including a preview of what is coming up in version 3.2, due for release in April (hint - it has something to do with random grid outages). Participants will be able to send in questions via chat, or in advance via email to webinars@homerenergy.com.
There is no cost to attend, but seats are limited, so you should register now.
By the way, we have a few slots left in our 2015 webinar schedule. Contact sales @homerenergy.com to book your webinar today.

"A Technology-Driven Disruption of Historic Proportions..."

If only we could claim credit for this interesting quote regarding the coming (or here?) shakeup in the utility industry. It comes from NRG CEO David Crane, as reported in RenewEconomy - "Future of energy - and decline of centralised generation - explained in 70 seconds."
Discussion of the coming changes in the utility industry due to increasing distributed generation range from the cataclysmic to the ho-hum, but whatever the opinion, it seems like everyone is talking about it. We'd love to hear your thoughts, too. More

Developers Use Storage to Keep Housing Off-Grid

The rapid change in the way electricity is delivered to customers is about to be highlighted by a new project that will see a new housing estate built without being connected to the grid. The idea has the support of the government of South Australia, a state which already sources 40 per cent of its electricity from wind and solar.South Australian solar energy and battery storage company Zen Energy Systems last week flagged it was in talks with housing developers to build energy self-reliant housing estates that don’t need to be connected to the main electricity grid. Raytheon Demonstrates 100% PV-Powered Microgrid System

Raytheon , the U.S. National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), Primus Power, and Advanced Energy together have successfully demonstrated an advanced microgrid system capable of islanded (off-grid) operation using stored and high penetration renewable energy.Raytheon's IPEM Microgrid Controller provides key supervisory control functions, employing model-based control methods to coordinate operation of microgrid resources and perform advanced energy management functions. These capabilities provide safe and reliable microgrid operation while maximizing efficiency via optimal use of renewable resources (e.g., PV) that would otherwise be unavailable during off-grid operation. Post-Fukushima Japan Has New Focus on Microgrids

The earthquake and tsunami that devastated Japan in March, 2011 left much of the eastern portion of the island without power for weeks and affected the power supply as far away as Tokyo. In the wake of that disaster, some companies and communities have started building microgrids to ensure power continuity after natural disasters.” More

HOMER Energy Assists with Tanzanian Mini-Grid Workshop Recruitment
HOMER Energy has been helping NREL and DOE with their initiative developing Quality Assurance Standards for Mini-grids.As part of that initiative, NREL held a workshop in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania on March 11, 2015. HOMER Energy queried their Tanzanian user base for interest in attending the workshop and got 70 replies from renewable energy professionals in Tanzania who wanted to attend. The venue had limited seating, so we unfortunately could not accommodate the entire group. The degree of interest in mini-grids and renewable energy in east Africa is clear, and our hope is that further activities in this region can include more people.
