Microgrids Save Fuel – and Lives – in Afghanistan

Signal Magazine reports that a new U.S. Army generator technology is saving fuel and lives in the rugged terrain of Afghanistan:

The 1-MW system is a microgrid that uses multiple generators, cutting back when demand is low.

Fuel saved translates into lives saved, as fuel convoys are frequent Taliban targets.

Although microgrids are the solution to bringing high-penetration renewables to the grid, this application shows how smart microgrids that are diesel based can still result in significant savings.
