ABB to Provide Power and Propulsion Systems for LNG-Powered Ferry

HOMER Energy partner ABB has won an award to deliver the complete electric power plant, electrical propulsion systems and an energy management solution for a liquefied natural gas (LNG) powered fast ferry. The 212-meter ferry will be capable of transporting 2800 passengers on its planned route between Tallinn, Estonia and Helsinki, Finland.

ABB’s technologies will help the new ship to minimize fuel and power consumption while providing reliable power supply for all electrical power equipment and systems. LNG is a cleaner fuel source than heavy fuel oil and will help reduce the environmental impact of maritime transport. As an LNG-powered ship, the new ferry will comply with the new strict emission regulations for the Emission Control Areas (ECA), which include the Baltic Sea.
